I've realized, as have many other members of the Wash. U. Belegarth community, that there is a serious lack of participation on campus. To drastically improve recruitment, I'm proposing the creation of a new Wash. U. unit called Ursa, after the Wash. U. bear mascot. By making the unit seem more affiliated with the University, I think it will be easier to integrate new fighters into the sport. More important is the aspect of converting the club from a group of individual fighters into a cohesive fighting force. People are more likely to regularly attend practices if they develop a specific role in a unit than if they are on their own. They'll take their commitment to fighting much more seriously if they realize people are counting on them to train regularly.
I'd like recruit ten to twenty new people, which will take some work. I'm working to create posters to increase visibility. The best way to get new people would be the Activities Fair on Sept. 3rd at 4:30 p.m. Angmarth, would it be possible to have a small event on that date on campus? Maybe get all the local fighters to come out all at once to get a sizable group?
Another big issue is the amount of equipment a unit needs. Reho, what's the armory look like for the club? How many swords and shields do we have? In terms of weapons, I'd like to get javelins for each sword and board fighter and spears and short swords for each spearman. I'd also like to get uniforms and armor, at least for officers. It's a hassle, but it really helps legitimize officers: the "that guy has the coolest gear, we should do what he says" mentality.
The cost constraints of all of that means most weapons and armor will have to be homegrown. I've looked up tutorials for armor and weapon creation online, but what would be best would be to actually have someone who knows what they're doing show me the ropes of construction. If anyone knows the finer points of spear, javelin, and leather armor construction, I'll be out at practice this Saturday and would really like to learn from you. Just write below so I remember to talk to you.
The tentative idea right now would be to shift the Sunday practice to Thursday. Does this work for everyone in the Wash. U. group?
That's about it. I'd like to make a decent showing for Oktoberfest, so there's a lot of work to do between now and then. I'd really like some input about this, so if you have a concern, please post it below.
